Watercolor illustrations of animals for card deck

I was recently hired by I.R.E.S. and Regione Piemonte to create a collection of illustrations.
I painted a series of pictures for a card deck that will be used within a role-playing game as part of a series of training tools. These materials are aimed at public service professionals who work with people with migratory backgrounds to make them exercise empathy and reflect on human complexity, conflicts, and self-biases.
The cards loosely symbolise various concepts linked to human nature, like "fear" or "accountability" and can be interpreted freely, according to each player's sensibility within the role play. I was given a list of specific features which served as guidance.
I initially thought about using a mixed digital technique, full colored editorial style with a hint of magic, but in the end we preferred a clean and realistic approach based on wide recognisable animals and natural scenes, on white background.
The pictures are painted in gouache, with occasional pencil colouring and some digital cleanup.
