Short project to create a cover, title page and frontispiece for the book Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. I chose to create a cover which had a lot of punch for this book because it covers such a serious issue and had a massive impact. The main theme of the book being the cruelty of slavery I focused on the aspect of slave branding by placing the books title onto the slaves face as if it were a brand to create something hard hitting which would trigger an emotional response. I chose this part of the body to focus in on because it had more punch and decided to go with a painting rather than than a photograph as the camera wasn't a used medium of the time and would make the book look too modern. The typeface chosen is reminiscent of America and the posters used to advertise slaves at the time, as this typeface is only suitable for headings, my secondary typeface used for body copy was Century Old School, a old style serif belonging to the American Type Founders noted for its exceptional legibility which was designed around the time of this books first publication. With the frontispiece I wanted to bring in the theme of religion since faith is such a huge theme in the book, to do this I combined Christianity with slavery, creating the symbol of the cross out of chains. Again I aspired for this to be a very hard-hitting image.
