About the project:
In Graphic Design 2, we were tasked with designing original packaging and graphics for a product collection based off of a character from a movie or TV show.
The collection I chose to create is a line of sunglasses inspired by the character Billy Hargrove from the series Stranger Things. Billy comes across as a classic “bad boy” but with more sinister, violent undertones and an attitude that will get him in trouble. He is the notorious troublemaker of Hawkins, and won’t let anyone get in the way of his plans. He encompasses the classic 80’s boy fashion with his white tucked in shirt, denim jacket, and shades. One of Billy’s most valued passions is his 1979 Camaro Z28, which he often drives around while also sporting his iconic aviator sunglasses.
The design:
My goal for the design aesthetic of this packaging was to be edgy, minimal, and slick, just like Billy is. The overall color scheme consists of dark tones that represent his twisted past and complement his notorious “bad boy” persona. Specific elements that relate to him such as his cherished blue Camaro, his brown necklace, and his job as a lifeguard are subtly incorporated into the design by using accent colors that represent each thing. I chose the name “Z28 Eyewear” because Billy loves and adores his Z28 Camaro. It is his most cherished possession and it makes many appearances throughout the series.
The collection comes with 3 different styles. The first is “Lifeguard Essentials”, which was inspired by his job as a lifeguard at Hawkins community pool“. The second pair is called “The Mind Flayers”, which is the name of the being that overtakes his body and controls his mind and actions. And the third pair is named “Speed Demons”, which was named after his love for his car and driving fast.
