Watercolor Vs CellPACK

The evolution of the CellPACK project, developed by Prof. Goodsell at Scripps Research, is represented in this images. On the left, a watercolor painting illustrating a Mycoplasma mycoides cell, on the right an illustration of Mycoplasma genitalium cell, the first 3D model of a bacterial cell ever build. The idea behind this representation is something along the lines of 'how it started Vs how it's going'.

The entire CellPACK project was born from the visionary approach of Goodsell to depict with watercolors cellular landscapes that experimental techniques are not able to capture with high level of detail. X-ray crystallography allows to reach atomic resolution, microscopy to reach micrometer resolution, but what about what's in the middle of these range? It's called mesoscale and Goodsell was one of the pioneers to study and imagine how the mesoscale would look like.
