Attraction primaire / primal attraction
I decided to call this project Attraction Primaire ( Primal Attraction) because, for me, it defines the feeling I have regarding sport and art practice. An inexplicable, nearly primal strength pushing me to always get back to these activities.
It’s also for me, this strength that guides us throughout our lives, this is the reason why I chose to also explore this subject.
Every scene and the whole story are interpretable through three different axes : The chapters of a life, the practice of a sport and the art creation process.
I chose this approach to demonstrate the similarities that exist, for me, in the art and sports practice and their répercussions on life in general.
The story / what I wanted to express
An idea appears it’s the birth stage, the beginning.
Next comes an experimentation period, still relatively abstract, composed of shapes and colors, it’s childhood.
First explorations of the environment and yourself, the first drafts of a project, the first steps in starting a new sport.
Then, it’s time to choose your own path by creating new things, trying new experiences, while learning a lot of things, this is adolescence..
A transition phase occurs, linking the inside and outside symbolizing the warm-up step, the slow start of a project, the time where you start your adult life.
When enough knowledge has been collected, and enough experiences have been lived, the production phase begins, the intense part of a sport exercise, adulthood.
Again, a more abstract chapter, represents the satisfaction of finished work, the calm you feel after a sport session, and the meditation on past experiences.
In the end, a rebirth, a new idea emerging, the will to surpass, all that with the knowledge gathered by previous generations and projects.
Art direction / Icons and objects
For the art direction of this project, I added to the 3D visuals, a collection of icons unique to every scene to represent the emotions and feelings you go through.
Graphically, I decided to group simple geometric shapes into symbols. This way of creating was inspired by the first graphic communication methods used by humans in the prehistoric era (another meaning of the word primal).
It was also important for me to attach to this short film physical objects to anchor the project in time a bit more.
behind the scenes / 3d creation
Each scene was created in blender, other tools used were Substance painter, Quixel Bridge, Adobe After Effects for compositing and motion design, Premiere pro for editing and color grading, Photoshop and Illustrator for communication and Reaper for sound design.
