The Spectacular Decay of Mare Island
Mare Island is actually a peninsula. The Mare Island Naval Shipyard was the first United States Navy base established on the Pacific Ocean. Many important naval ships were built here, including over 50 submarines. The base closed in 1996. Since then, it has been steadily decaying, resulting in the images you see here.
