NACD Gives Recognition for Contributors

The National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) has set standards for corporate governance for more than 40 years. The NACD assists businesses with establishing board standards by understanding that change is constant in business and that board processes and insights are constantly evolving. Ultimately, this work fuels the NACD's broader mission of being catalysts of economic opportunity for businesses and communities it serves.

Outside of the mission, however, the NACD also recognizes those entities and individuals who have worked toward positive impacts in corporate governance. The organization has over 22,000 directors who seek to provide education and insight to other directors to affect positive change in this field, and this year, the NACD gave awards for members who were influential and individuals and businesses who implemented diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I).

In August 2021, the organization recognized corporate directors, policymakers, influencers, and corporate governance experts for their work in positively impacting boardroom performance and practices at the virtual gala. In its 15th year, the 2021 Directorship 100 recognized directors who happened to be very influential boardroom directors and leaders in the corporate governance community. According to NACD CEO and president, Peter R. Gleason, those selected exhibited excellence in governance in one of the most challenging years.

Four other awards were given during the virtual gala. The annual B. Kenneth West Lifetime Achievement Award was given to recognize a director who has exhibited distinguished service over the course of their career while serving as director for public, private, or non-profit boards.

For this award, the honorees are awarded for their devotion to improving boardroom practices, excellent leadership, and impact in the boardroom and communities they serve. The winner for 2021 was Alfred E. Osborne, Lead Independent Director for Kaiser Aluminum Corp. and Director of Source Capital, Inc.

The other awards given during the gala were for the Public Company Direct of the Year and Non-Profit Director of the Year. These awards go to three individuals who embody integrity, mature confidence, high performance, and informed judgment, or the NACD principles of professionalism.

William M. Cook, Non-executive Chair of IDEX Corp and Neenah Inc. and Independent Director of Axalta Coating Systems Ltd., was awarded the Public Company Director of the Year. Lynne N. Clarke, Chair of Nielsen Massey Vanillas and Independent Director of ABARTA Coca Cola Beverages, the Vollrath Company, and A. Duie Pyle, Inc., was awarded the Private Company Director of the Year. Phyllis J. Campbell, Independent Director of Air Transport Services Group, Inc., Director of Allen Institute and Washington Roundtable, and Immediate Past Chair of US-Japan Council was awarded the Non-profit Director of the Year.

In November 2021, in conjunction with Deloitte, the organization also recognized three boards for their platforms on diversity, equity, and inclusion. The NACD Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion awards were given to three boards that exhibited values aligning with DE&I, whether the boards had a deep understanding of company culture, and whether the boards created a safe, people-centered environment for employees, among other factors.

This year’s awards went to Cascade Public Media, FHLBank San Francisco, and the Progressive Corporation. According to a press release, these companies exhibited the above practices, in addition to exhibiting forward-thinking activities that leveraged DE&I.
