“Volkhonka. The Unhurried Walk”, which is about the history and architecture of Volkhonka, one of the oldest streets in Moscow situated near the Kremlin. Written by architectural historian Federica Rossi, the book is something more than an ordinary guidebook. A big historical and archival research preceded the writing of the book. Written in an easy manner the book opens new pages of thrilling history of the district. It is richly illustrated with both modern and historical materials, many of which are published for the first time.

Книга начинается с трех вводных статей, рассказывающих о роли района в градостроительстве Москвы. В основной части представлены 30 зданий, выбранных по своей архитектурной, культурной и исторической ценности. Каждая статья разбита на несколько разделов. Сначала мы видим современные фото объекта. Затем следует краткая характеристика здания. Основной текст организован в хронологическом порядке и отражает его эволюцию в исторические периоды. В тексте также есть небольшие статьи об известных личностях, чья жизнь была связана с этим зданием. Затем критический очерк об архитектуре и биографические сведения об архитекторе. Далее следует раздел с историческими иллюстрациями, планами и фотографиями. В конце главы идут тексты, подробно рассказывающие некоторые интересные факты, связанные с важными историческими событиями, связанными со зданием, или личные воспоминания его жителей. В приложении к книге есть карта и материалы о церквях, когда-то расположенных в районе, но в основном утраченных, карта с хронологической характеристикой района, словарь архитектурных терминов, список иллюстраций, литература и именной указатель. Книга рассчитана на любителей архитектуры, специалистов и людей, интересующихся историей.

The book starts with three introductory articles telling about the role of the district in the urban planning of Moscow. The main part depicts 30 buildings chosen for their architectural, cultural and historical value. Every article is structured into several sections. First, we see the modern photos of the object. Then comes a short characteristic of the building. The main text is organized chronologically depicting its evolution in historical periods. In the text there are also small articles about famous persons whose life was connected to the building. Then critical essay about the architecture and biographical information about the architect. After that goes section with historical illustrations, plans and photographs. At the end of a chapter goes the texts telling in details some interesting facts, focused on important historical events related with the building, or personal memoirs of its inhabitants. In the appendix of the book there is a map and material about churches once located in the district, but mostly were lost, the map with chronological characteristics of the district, dictionary of architectural terms, list of illustrations, literature and name index. The book is intended to the audience of architecture lovers, specialists and people who are interested in the history.

Путеводитель «Волхонка. Неторопливая прогулка» с первого взгляда завораживает своей сложностью и полнотой. Иллюстрации и типографика используются очень деликатно, и их огромное количество привело к впечатляющей общей работе. The “Volkhonka. The Unhurried Walk” guidebook about one of the oldest streets in Moscow fascinates at first glance with its complexity and comprehensiveness. The illustrations and typography are used in a highly sensitive manner and in their sheer abundance have resulted in an impressive overall work. The cover with embossing was produced in a technically sophisticated manner to pique curiosity about the content.
