Maria Antonia Cay, aka Toñita, has been operating the Caribbean Social Club in Brooklyn for more than 30 years, the only one of its kind left. I've been a regular customer ever since I moved to New York, but I really never got to know Toñita before. This class exercise was the perfect opportunity to do so. After getting to know her I started spending most of my weekends at the bar.

I found out that the thing that she enjoys the most in life is being able to open the bar every weekend. So I thought of throwing a party to celebrate the 30 years of the bar, and she agreed. But little did she know that I was planning a gift for her.

I decided to design a poster for the 30th anniversary of the bar. I was inspired by the hand-lettering style of the Puerto Rican master Lorenzo Homar and the warm and colorful atmosphere of the place.
Flyers for the big party. Printed on newsprint paper using a risograph duplicator.
Toñita receiving the gift.
I made it to the wall!
