Description
I made this game because I love traditional side scroller style video games and I wanted to make one of my own. I used the theme of a buck jumping over hunters and traps because I just like hunting and I wanted a running animal to be the base of the overall theme. I also love drawing animals and landscapes so I incorporated hand drawn backgrounds and pixelated characters. I wanted to explore the use of millis timers and I was intrigued at the jump function and how it worked with hitboxes, so that was something I wanted to explore.
In the game, your player is a buck trying to jump over traps and  hunters to escape. The hunters and traps spawn at random time intervals and at random speeds to keep the game interesting. If you hit a trap or hunter then you die. It is called Rut Run because hunting season is during the rut, which is the term for the breeding season for the deer.
The process of making this game was meaningful to me because I was able to explore coding concepts I struggled with, and I got to incorporate some hand drawn art. I spend a lot of long nights drawing and trying to fix errors in my code, but it all came together for me in the end.
Making Rut Run
Below are the animations I made of the deer, hunter and trap using Piskel. I made 7 different versions of the deer to make it look like it was running as the animation plays.
Here are the start and the end screens as well as the game in progress. I drew the backgrounds in my computers sketchbook app. I used darker colors and themes because I like the way the color portrays the mood of the game.
For the background music, I used "Quiet Resource" by Evelyn Stein. It plays during case 1, while the game is in progress.
