The tale of Chang’e, the Chinese goddess of the moon, and her Moon Rabbit companion is attributed to the Mid-Autumn Festival. In summary of one account, Chang’e’s husband Hou Yi shot eight of nine suns that caused suffering in the earth due to high temperature. The warrior was then gifted with an elixir of immortality. One day, an apprentice of his wanted to take the elixir for himself. Chang’e then took the drink and ascended to the moon with her rabbit. From then on, Hou Yi and generations to come would present delicacies as a tribute to the moon goddess.
