Girls Sanctuary in Iraq
2021
Throughout the history of the Mesopotamian culture, the Tigris River has witnessed the rise and fall of great civilizations, who come to its banks in search of a shelter and a starting point. Water has become the element that carries the history of the place, but also purifies, cleanses and renews it. Water is the beginning and the end.

Under this premise, the concept of The WaterGirls arises. A project that appropriates the purifying character of water and understands this element in its different states and forms to build a program around it, with the intention of conceiving a safe and restorative space for girls who are victims of the conflict.

The WaterGirls understands that every space must be accompanied by water, so different configurations arise that allow altering the form of this element depending on its activity. Impluvium, for rest; mirror of water, to capture the sky; oasis, for fun; a roadside canal, for direction; and finally, the floodable terraces, as the trace left by the passage of time in the project.

The project understands the context in which it is carried out, so material, social and environmental sustainability is a priority. It makes use of local materials and the traditional construction techniques, as well as the use of the context's own vegetation.

Water is the essential element that connects and brings the project together, allowing its spaces to flow together with the new lives of the girls.
