Bystander and Street Photography Now

BYSTANDER:
Widely regarded as: 'the Bible of street photography', this photobook is complied of street photographs from many different photographers. Including Cartier-Bresson, Atget, Winogrand, Parr, Arbus and Meyerowitz, (and many more iconic photographers) it is no wonder that the book has been described as 'the street photographers Bible', as it gives photography historical framework and academic study. I first came across this photobook when doing research into Joel Meyerowitz, (as it was created by him and Colin Westerbeck) and was immediately fascinated by how much culture and iconography it holds. The most evocative images in street photography are in this book, and it is also important in showing a huge documentation of our ethnography roughly in chronological order. Each part discusses a different era in street, from the early days of the mid-nineteenth century Europe and America to the late twentieth century, and dedicates entire chapters to the key figures of that period. Meyerowitz curated the images while Westerbeck wrote the text.
STREET PHOTOGRAPHY NOW:
Street photography now includes the works of 56 photographers who make candid depictions of our every day life on the street. It has been described as "the first broad street photography book to be published since Bystander".
I found it interesting to view lots of different types of street photography and how broad the  genre can be stretched. More information on Martin Parr and Meyerowitz was useful, however other photographers such as Markus Hartel who said "my pictures are not necessarily pretty, but they do show beautiful moments of the urban jungle", and this quote describes well my ideas about my project.
I think its really important to view books such as Bystander and Street Photography Now if you are doing street photography yourself as it educates us more on what the genre is all about and the history of it which is essential if you are studying this type of photography and have an interest in it.
