Saint Nicholas is a festive character, a good magician, who is identified with the image of Nicholas the Wonderworker.
On the eve of St. Nicholas's holiday, children write him letters with their wishes, which they put in the mailbox or leave outside the window. St. Nicholas leaves a gift under the pillow or in a sock for polite children, and a sharp one for naughty ones. Cutting serves as a kind of warning to the child that it is time to think about his behavior and correct himself.
