Coffee Machine Redesign

The task for the project was to propose a new design for a coffee machine that uses capsules.

After a case study on a coffee machine I used frequently, a number of problems were identified which needed addressing. I wanted the new coffee machine to posses the following qualities.

• Needs to be capable of adapting to free countertop space

• Water container that holds a lot of volume, so it can doesn't have to be refilled frequently

• A machine that has the ability of holding a very tall glass

• Have a container that stores already used up capsules, instead of having to dispose of the capsule after each drink

• Easy to use with an understandable interface

The main idea of the machine is to have a rotatable piece that serves acts as a base for the water container. In this way, the user could adapt the machine to the space they have on disposal. Additionally, the machine's footprint can be adjusted to an unusual shape, that might be more efficient depending on the space it is set it.

The design is proposed in 2 contrasting colours, black and white.

3 buttons correspond to the drink size the user wants to make. The space for inserting the capsules get revealed when the main button gets pushed back. This button also doubles as an on/off switch

The machine has an integrated compartment for used up capsules, that automatically drop into it after they have been used. The water tank is a cylinder that can be detached from the base and has a cap on top to prevent spillage.

The front of the machine has several notches where the drip tray can be installed. The lowest position allows for placing a 17 cm tall glass, or in this case an aluminium shaker cup.
