For this project, I wanted to create a visual representation of anxiety and depression. The message is about feeling trapped or consumed by anxiety or depression. With anxiety, some people can often experience an internal battle with themselves when in a social setting or environment, afraid to speak fearing judgment from others or even themselves. The torn paper across the eyes reveals the brokenness that lies underneath a facade. On the outside, a person with depression may present themselves as perfectly normal without any emotional issues, but on the inside they battle with self-worth, internal pain and emotional pain.

For this concept, I asked my sister, who is battling with anxiety and depression, to describe how she feels. I then came up a way to visually describe her battle with the image above. To achieve this, I had to use several mediums, which included photographing my sister, editing the photo and retouching the thread and torn paper in Adobe Photoshop as well as illustrating the inside in Adobe Illustrator.

I chose the blue to represent the cold and sadness that lie underneath and black and white to convey the lack of vibrance in personality that one with anxiety or depression may exhibit.
