Demand for Beauty, a celebration of Gunta Stölzl
This project is for an imaginary art exhibit for a class I took a couple of years ago. I enjoyed spending time researching Gunta Stölzl's art and figuring out how to incorporate it into a set of posters celebrating her life's work. The title Demand for Beauty comes from a quote from Stölzl that resonated with me as a beginning designer.

Gunta Stölzl was an artist during the Bauhaus era. She created textiles and occasionally made watercolor paintings to use as templates. She was also a pioneer in her field and the first female master of the Bauhaus school.
This poster was watercolor and text. I used the painting to add dimension over the artist's name. If I were to make this project over again, I would have mixed the paint a little more and used Photoshop to adjust the colors a little more. Stölzl's work is more vibrant and finished than what I created here with a children's watercolor kit.
This is the one I worked on the longest. I spent a long time deciding how much of the letters could hang off the edges. I then created several different iterations of this one in different colors before settling on this vibrant pink. I think what made this difficult was creating asymmetrical balance and focal point with only type. I feel like I succeeded fairly well.
I wanted to bring in some geometric shapes to echo the geometric patterns from her work in the poster. I didn't want to distract much from the image while still pulling the elements together.

The image for this was a little bit rough - the image of Stölzl and her daughter was small and low resolution. I used an effect that wasn't entirely desirable, but still works better than the original photo. Stölzl and her daughter are draped in Stölzl's work, symbolizing her connection to both. The artist is wearing a watercolor painting of a pattern, while her daughter is wearing a finished piece of art.
