Mission San Jose along with its four sister missions were built beginning in 1718 along the San Antonio River in what was at the time the northern frontier of New Spain. Established by the Spanish Empire and the Catholic Church, they introduced Christianity and farming to the natives of the area and formed the core of new communities.
