KEANE - Dirt

Music video for the song "Dirt", from the new album by British alternative rock band KEANE
The song is written and composed by Tim Rice Oxley in 2019, and is inspired by the history of the so-called Silk Road and the destruction of the Medina ancient souk in Aleppo, Syria.
Story + Inspiration

The first moodboard is the very first visual research that I shared with the PR team and the group members.
It’s a small collection of old family photos Aleppo and few other historical sites in Syria.
In the second board, I added some vintage Russian, Japanese and Arabic graphics that reminds me of my childhood vacations in Aleppo (Book covers of my summer reads, patterns I used to stare at on my aunt’s curtains, prints and cards from the 80s…)

Family trips in the Syrian ancient cities of Aleppo, Idleb and Al-Hosn Castle –– Circa 1988, 1990

Words by the group

We recorded Dirt during the Cause and Effect sessions, but even though it was one of our favourites we left it off the final album because it was very different thematically to the rest of the record. We’re very pleased to be able to release it at last.

Dirt is an attempt to imagine the desperation of innocent people caught up in violent conflict. At the time of writing it, I was trying to learn a little about the history of the so-called Silk Road and in the process came to understand not only how beautiful, ancient, cosmopolitan and deeply cultured cities like Aleppo and Damascus are, but how much of ‘Western’ civilisation as we know it was inherited from the Middle East and Central Asia.

The incredible video for the song was created by Syrian artist @yasmeenfanari. We’re extremely grateful to Yasmeen for bringing her own experiences of life in Aleppo and Damascus to a stunning and powerful piece of work that enhances the song beautifully. Link in bio to watch the full video.
