Meditation counteracts these effects by reducing and blocking the release of inflammatory stress hormones like cortisol and cytokines. In multiple studies, people who meditated for just 15 minutes a day experienced deeper sleep, lowered blood pressure, clearer thinking, and fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Meditation Can Reduce Symptoms of Anxiety

Since anxiety is directly tied to stress, it's no surprise that meditation can also help with the symptoms of anxiety, says Zachary Singh. Meditation's first focus is the breath. Taking deep, even breaths, in through the nose and out through the mouth, often to a count, can calm your nervous system and quiet your mind, both of which help lessen symptoms of anxiety.

Those who meditate regularly also report an increased ability to control their thoughts and reactions. This comes from a practice known as mindfulness, says Zachary Singh. You don't try to suppress or bury your negative thoughts or feelings--you simply observe them and then let them pass. This allows your nervous system to complete the cycle of catharsis and reset itself. This is incredibly helpful for those with intrusive thoughts and severe anxiety.

Meditation Can Improve Your Mental Function

Just like every other muscle in your body, you have to exercise your mind to keep it healthy. Meditation and mindfulness are the best tools you can use to keep your mind sharp. While scientists are still trying to discover exactly how meditation works to strengthen the mind, study after study has found improved cognitive function in participants.

Meditation quiets the mind and puts the brain in an almost trance-like state, says Zachary Singh. This allows your mind the space it needs to process, store, and retrieve information more efficiently--jobs it usually does while you're asleep. It's basically like taking a nap, but more structured. This leads to longer attention spans, increased focus, better memory, and clearer thinking.
