Background research
Sexual shame is deeply-rooted in East Asian culture. Even in the thirty years’ high-speed development of social economy, Chinese families avoid the discussion of sex habitually. It results in the consequence that Chinese children grow up in an environment where there is a lack of the concept—sex. The environment of greenhouse created by the family actually becomes a fragile protective containment, and it is difficult for the children to keep away and deal with the problems related to sexual abuse in the environment where there is the absence of sexual education, and they’d be subjected to whole-life influence on the construction of values in the process of their growth. In 2015, it was revealed by the report of World Health Organization that 9.5% of the girls and 8% of the boys in China suffered from sexual abuse in certain forms, which meant that every 1 out of 10 children ever suffered from sexual abuse.

Doll sitter is a hybrid toy system targeting at sexual education designed based on arousing empathy. Through positive affective engagement and the space of sustainable content creation of the children aged 5-8 towards anthropomorphic doll, children’s curiosity about sexual knowledge can be stimulated and enhanced. Traditional parents’ awkwardness in front of sexual knowledge can be alleviated at the same time. Doll Sitter is created by Hunan University, Changsha Library, Hunan Province Public Service Educational Institution and a series of workshops, with the aim of improving a series of problems including “awkwardness, obscureness and the lack of understanding” encountered by sexual education in China.
