Still Life: Racism

In term 3, we were given a new project where the medium was oil painting on canvas and the topic was Still Life. The theme is chosen by ourselves, so I chose the theme of Racism.

I used two teddy bears that I have at home, one white and one brown. The white bear represents white people and brown represents other skin colours (yellow, black, red) that are usually discriminated against in the society.

There are many things can be said about the composition of the painting. I have used the triangle and L-shape composition, a popular still life technique that artists usually use. The shape can be seen through the higher position of the white bear (higher class) and the lower position of the brown bear (lower class).

The  bears are separated by a wall of 2 books: Fifty Shades of Grey and Killing Hitler.
Fifty Shades of Grey is a controversial book written by E.L.James, where heavy sexual practices were dominany illustrated. In the painting, this book represents sexism of the races.
Killing Hitler by Roger Moorhouse reprensents racism as Adolf Hitler is famous for killing millions of innocent Jewish people back in the days.
Background created with palette knife.
