ENDERS GAME BOOK COVER

The purpose of this project was to create 3 book covers for a book of our choice. The covers needed to convey themes, moods, and ideas the story tells without giving away major plot points. One cover needed to focus on typography, the other needed to incorporate hand made elements and the last one was an artists choice cover.
The book I chose was Enders' Game. Enders' Game has very heavy militaristic themes as well as themes about loss of innocence and war.
In my typography cover I tried to communicate to the reader the setting of the book by using futuristic type. I tried to use both hard and soft edges to keep it interesting. I used the calligraphy brush tool to create an aggressive wordmark of my own design.
For my personal choice cover I tried to reference paperback covers of the 60s and 70s with a new twist. I created a plane that looked almost like a chess board, alluding to the games Ender played in battle school. One of the tiles seems to be missing, with a hole where it once was. This alludes to the twist ending that these games were not what they seemed to Ender. I used ITC Avant Garde to further convey the retro sci-fi feel, as it was a font used on many Isaac Aasimov book covers.
My final piece, the physical one, was a collage demonstrating the arc that Ender goes throughout the book. His world at the beginning is understandable and easy to navigate, but as the novel unravels so does this notion itself. By the end, Ender realizes that nothing is what it seems, and I tried to convey that chaos through this collage slowly deteriorating little by little.
