For this project, students were directed to select a book from an approved list and design three unique book covers. One of the covers should be designed solely with typography, one should be crafted out of physical materials, and the last should be created using any medium. The covers should not only tie into the overall theme of the book's story, but should also convey a deeper understanding of the author's message. The book covers will be 6 in. x 9 in. in size. 

Although there are non-type elements in the design, like the colored background and the cross, the overall design stays true to typography by utilizing physical bullets to create the word WAR. The cross is also a symbol that plays into the title and theme of the book. It is a religious cross and a symbol meaning “AND” that binds the title words together. The contrast between the neat “PEACE” and the chaotic and dangerous “WAR” illustrate
a great contrast between the actions and meaning of each word, and the underlying experience of each environment.

The cover makes great use of isolation, alignment, and focal points. The bullets are placed against a neutral background which help them to become the focus of the design. The cross surrounded by bullets pays homage to the duality of war. In war times, soldiers surrounded by the instruments of war have to look inward and upward to find peace and solace. The overall silhouette of the design, including the words on the page create
the shape of a chess piece. This is a simple homage to the war strategies that are spoken of in the novel.

This last design makes use of juxtaposition to demonstrate the opposite nature of war and peace. The mushroom cloud creates a shape similar to that of a tree, but the tree favors prosperity, life, and growth, while the mushroom cloud signifies destruction, death, and decay. This is the history of the world in photographic form.
