Collaboration with ARUP 2021

ARUP is a globally recognised multidisciplinary design firm. ARUP firmly believes in the power of collaboration and creativity, to solve complex challenges such as sustainability, by turning exciting imaginary ideas into tangible reality.

In partnership with ARUP and working within a multidisciplinary QUT team, I experienced the rewarding process of  collaborative design participating in a 13 week challenge to visualise a sustainable 2050 city university campus. Our team chose a non human stakeholder found on our campus - native Australian bees. Our aims were to provide bees with increased pollination resources and safe hive spaces within a university context. We aimed to be highly imaginative producing a design in the context of 2050. This led to the development of a "Bee Centered Action Plan", in order to make our exciting ideas a tangible reality. Each member was tasked to specialize in a United Nations Sustainability Goal (SDG), mine being Human Health and Well-being. The incorporation of "bee centric design" and human nature connections led to the creation of my solution - Hives of Well-Beeing.

Following ARUP's principles and values and being part of a multidisciplinary team, led to an output of imaginative ideas which caught the attention of faculty and staff. My team's Bee Centeric poster was chosen out of 105 teams to be showcased at The Cube at QUT Gardens Point and was additionally featured in a QUT news article written by Sally Dillion.

Aims of the Hive of Well-Being
Considering the categories above, could a symbiotic relationship between bees and humans be achieved? Could this system make humans accountable for nature and encourage nature restoration and care? Could nature reward humans by improving health and well-being through this care? The system described below attempts to solidify these ideas in an imagined 2030 future context.
