The brief required a creation of utopian potcards, these were created in collaboration with graphic designer Jessica Volschenk, The 4 songs chosen off the album “fineline by harry styles” are: Golden, sunflower, cherry and canyon moon.
Rationale

Utopia to us is an ideal ethereal world filled with endless possibilities. A fantasy landscape and an imaginal realm that allows us to escape reality. A world where troubles and evils do not exist and every element syncs together in perfect harmony. Utopia is an infinite paradise.

We explored various ideas and topics through research, collaboration, ideation and the creative process and decided on one that connected with us the most. The concept of our world is a music utopia.

This concept was chosen as music reveals the vulnerable and authentic nature of the human spirit. Music is a sonic medium yet has the ability to create visual worlds within our minds and transport us mentally as well as emotionally to another place and time.Music transcends reality and allows us to connect with our emotions and spirit.

This concept is very close and personal to us as we both have a strong personal connection with music and both play guitar. Music connects people together and connects us as friends since we became close by sharing songs with each other. Music is a utopia for us personally as it provides an ethereal escape from reality. It is authentic, raw, honest and is without limitations.

We decided to take this concept and expand it further by visually illustrating the worlds that songs transport us to emotionally and create a story around this utopian world music creates within our imagination. Illustrating how music can create different realms and dimensions through the emotions it ignites within us.

We chose the album fine line as we both emotionally connected with it and wanted the songs to be from the same album to create a further sense of coherence within our artwork. We created landscapes out of the songs that connected with us the most and inspired us.

We chose a loose representation of the lofi style as lofi is an art aesthetic as well as simultaneously being a music genre which further reinforces the music utopia theme. We wanted to challenge ourselves and try a new art style that would get us out of our comfort zones and help us explore something new. We are both really intrigued by this style and felt that this style matched the mood and tone of our art works.

Medium chosen was digital as it provides a broad range of possibilities, collaboration and colour. It is a new medium for us and allows us to grow as artists.

Typography we have designed a brush script as brush scripts tend to be expressive and personal just like music which links with our overall theme. The brush script is hand written and organic linking with the emotive, authentic and vulnerable nature of music that connects with us deeply. The personal element the brush script brings together our concept of a personal utopia showing how utopia is different to each person and is a personalised state of mind. The font created suits the mood and vulnerable essence of the album and music as a whole.
