A sophisticated, polished approach defines Haioka’s “Aru”. Quite thoughtful, there is a smoky mysterious nature to the way the pieces evolve. Everything about the sound has a genteel quality. Stylistically the songs are rooted in pop, with elements of EDM, R&B, and trip-hop brought into the fray. By far the absolute soul of the album comes from the way that vocals weave through the experience. Lyrics are chosen for a pure poignant poetry, featuring verses that feel wonderful. Exquisite detail goes for the heart of the matter, for the number of flourishes feels lovely.

Vocals set the tone on the breathy beauty of “Yoru Wo Koete (feat. Yu Ishigaki)” for the evolution of the sound stirs the very soul. Dreamy in disposition “Koe” feels as if it is gently floating away into the sonic ether. Bright and shimmering “Dokoka Talk (feat. Plasma Rüby)” proves to be the very core of the work, with the infectious groove leading the way. Staccato melodies pop with the bouncy bliss of “Delayed Souvenir” for a futuristic sensibility enters into the equation. On “Hammings” a bit of an industrial edge comes into the equation for there is an intensity to the sound design. Ramshackle rhythms tie together with the catchy qualities of “Gikushaku”. Jazzy with a classic cool comes the spaciousness of “Always Ai”. Multi-suite “See You Zen” brings the whole of the album to a thoughtful conclusion.

With “Aru” Haioka proves to be a highly patient pop smith, crafting a world that has such a lovely intimate approach.
