To reflect upon my experience and education in this studio, I chose to create an
SKO that embodied my hands-on approach to experimental design and paid homage
to the roots of the practice. The most important part of the design to me was
encouraging sustained cognition. To do this, I chose to create two larger designs
that would be printed across all 24 faces of the cards. The idea behind this was that
the viewer would have to arrange the cards like a puzzle to read the information. I
also chose to randomise the arrangement of both images so that one arrangement
of the cards to reveal an image, would not necessarily reveal the image on the
card's opposite side.
The CD cover I approached as though it was a poster, as this is the traditional format
of the 1990’s experimental graphic design that we were introduced to through
the Studio Practice YouTube video in week one. I also incorporated micro-compositions
to elevate the design.
Overall, my SKO encapsulates the core practices of experimental design that we
explored throughout the semester and encourages the viewer to explore the artefact
deeply to uncover all the information it holds.
