What to Know About Flossing with Dental Implants

What to Know About Flossing with Dental Implants
The natural teeth immediately signal the brain when an injury occurs on the gum, right? You feel pain. However, with dental implants, it’s a bit different. Remember, implants are artificial and don’t have nerves, so they are not connected to the brain in any way. So, what do you do when flossing dental implants?

Be Gentle

When flossing dental implants, be gentle. If you injure the tooth, you will not feel the pain; thus, you will not know you have a wound. Let me explain it like this. There is a peri-implant seal when you get your implant, rather than having a ligament to attach the implant to the bone. When flossing too hard, you might break this seal and open a way for the bacteria to enter your gum. It will comprise the implant. Breaking this seal will not be registered by the brain, so you will not feel any pain. However, you will have issues with the bacteria that are now in your gum.

So, when flossing, be gentle. Just because it is artificial doesn’t mean you should be hard on it. When you too hard on it also, you will injury your gums, leading to bleeding.

It is also essential to floss beneath your prosthesis. A floss threader is a crucial device that will help you achieve floss beneath them.

How to Floss with Dental Implants

Take 12 to 30 centimetres of string floss and wrap it around your middle finger. Leave space of about seven centimetres wide to work with.

Tenderly slide the floss between your teeth, rubbing along the side of the dental implant and crown.

Create a c with your floss as you work around the base of the tooth

Work with the floss up and out as you remove the floss from the tooth.

If you are not satisfied with the work, take another piece and repeat the process.
