Eaton Elementary School: Public Art Commission by DGS

It was recently my privilege to create this mixed-media collage history 'scavenger hunt' for the community of Eaton Elementary School. The work was commissioned by the Department of General Services in collaborating with Zenith Art Gallery for a budget of $15,000 and completed in three months.
This architectural rendering showed the space for the artwork.
This color concept sheet showed palettes and harmonies for the project.
My idea for the artwork was to make a history 'scavenger hunt' featuring both the school's namesake, General John Eaton, and of the story of the school's community. proposed the imagery above to reflect the biography of John Eaton.
This imagery was proposed to reflect the rich and diverse community around the school.
I drafted two basic designs, one incorporating a flag and a bookshelf, the other composed of three larger panels with found object sculptures...
The selection committee asked for a hybridization of the two ideas. I revised the design to include the 'bookshelf' element along with the 3-d panels.
Fabrication of the final piece was completed on time and within budget. The images above show the final piece from the sides.
Found object sculptures incorporated into the picture plane bring the work to life and invite the viewers touch.
'scavenger hunt' key
This key to the 'scavenger hunt' shows how the collage material was added to the piece and invites teachers to use the artwork as a teaching tool.

This was a fun and fascinating piece to research and create. I'd like to thank the commissioning body DGS, its administrators, and the broader Eaton Elementary School community for choosing me for this project, the wonderful team at Zenith Gallery for their invaluable moral and logistical support, and to longtime Eaton art teacher Margaret Delorme for her invaluable contribution of collage material.
