Internship Project (Fawkner Commons Food Hub Workshop)

Fawkner Commons Food Hub Group Internship Project
November 2020 - February 2021
Fawkner Commons from Open Food Network is a community led not-for-profit food distribution hub located at the Fawkner Bowls Club in the suburb of Fawkner in Victoria, Australia. They provide food security in response to the global pandemic of COVID-19 as they just started in May 2020. We were supervised by Dr. Jen Rae whose role included the logistics/visioning, networking/collaborating, and the creative aspects of the organisation.

I, along with the other interns Abby Christiaans and Helene Hartung, were tasked to design and add to the Food Hub workshop’s card game materials. The game acted as a starter toolkit for people who were envisioning of opening up a food hub. The organisation had previously done the workshop already with their previous cards so we had a basic concept and structure of the game before redesigning and adding more to it. The deliverables included redesigned cards, instruction sheet on how to access Google Maps for non-tech-savvy users, a couple of presentation icons, an illustrated food map system art to be used digitally on the presentations as cover art. Along with these an organised style guide and design specifications document to summarise everything created.

I established the layout and design of the project that answered Fawkner Commons’ practical and conceptual needs. I presented accessible design to align with Fawkner Commons’ value of inclusivity. Throughout the projects I improved efficiency in the project by creating templates for the team when creating the icons in place.

We started our internship at November 26, 2020 doing online meetings every Tuesday and Thursdays through Zoom during the COVID lockdown. The internship ended on February 11, 2021 with us successfully completing the designs for the game and other deliverables.
Accessible Design
The project includes inclusive and accessible design. The icons have been put through a simulator that simulated different forms of color blindness. The purpose for this was to see if the icons’ shapes are contrasted enough to be legible to everyone. For the font of the text, we’ve chosen a sans-serif font that is plain without any decorative aspect to it for the dyslexic readers. Below you will find the simulated images.
