City as a Graphical Art

"City as a Graphical Art" is an exhibition organized by the National Center of Contemporary Art (Arsenal) in Nizhny Novgorod. The exposition demonstrates the reflection of the city in maps and prints from the 16th century to nowadays. Inspired by the ancient hand-made prints and outlines of rivers and roads of our region, we created the dot pattern, which became the center of communication. The typography aims to underline the specific features of the cartographic materials’ calligraphy.

As the main object of the exhibition, the cartography became a resource of the architecture inspiration that is underlined in the grid decor of this space. Architectures realized this idea by installing  mesh constructions for exhibiting objects. Supporting this concept, we created the printed map, which facilitates navigate the exhibition place.

The printed map helps to orientate at the exhibition. It contains additional information about sections and each object and illustrates the most significant items of the exposition. The information on the sides of the booklet works with the exhibition plan to quickly navigate the exhibition. For a primary color, we were interested in gently reflecting the vintage paper and inks’ shades and the historical context of the exhibition as well.
