PACIFIC WAVES
Pacific Waves is a painting project completed during the lockdown amid the pandemic. Recreating the visuals of waves seen during travels on the east coast of Japan was a way to transport and reconnect with travel memories and feelings.

Over the past year, due to the international travelling restrictions, I've been exploring the coasts in my province and have been looking closely at visual details of the St. Lawrence River's waves. Each time around, I've been telling myself how elegant the movements were and how challenging it would be to recreate similar visuals.
After a couple of gouache studies, I challenged myself to recreate the same seascape feeling I would recall from travel memories.

The water is rendered with different shades of blue, added by black and white contrast. Curvaceous lines of the waves and asymmetrical composition of crashing waves were created with layering techniques. Usage of extra coarse pumice gel would allow volume and depth while giving a sense of movement.
