Paper Making

Process

Brief : To evoke any one sense out of the five ( touch, sight, smell, taste and hear) through paper making.

I chose 'sight' and tried to explore it. I ended up experimenting with the translucency and opacity of the paper by layering it one above the other. The technique also involved fusing one layer of paper with the other without the use of adhesive and could be only achieved when the paper layers are in wet stage.
Initially simple patterns of checks and stripes were made by resisting the mould with cello tape strips. The result was visually pleasing as light could only pass through selective areas in different proportions which further enhanced the overlapping patterns on the paper.

To make the patterns a bit more complex and aesthetic, layers of stencils were made out of OHP sheet. The stencil was placed in between the mould and deckle and the further process of paper making was followed.

Final outcome in the form of tessellations
