Nátthagi valley │ Iceland Photo Gallery

Nátthagi is a low-growing valley just north of Suðurstrandarvegur and south of Fagradalsfjall. In the spring of 2021, thin-flowing dyngju lava began to flow down into the valley from the crater in Geldingadalur and covered its bottom and filled slowly.

It was remarkable to observe how this valley was filled with lava from the eruption in Geldingadalur and to witness how a new landscape was formed. I probably went there about twenty times to photograph and take videos of the changes and there was always something new to see. Sometimes I sat down for one to two hours simply to experience the forces that took place there and it always went so that the lava forced me to stand  up and move.
Eventually the valley filled up and everyone waited, or waited for the lava to flow out of the valley if the eruption would continue.

These three pictures show how the lava pushed up the bottom of Nátthagavatn and continued as there was no tomorrow.

For me, it was a privilege to observe these forces of nature.
