The current art project I am working on is dedicated to the punk era in the USSR. This is a contemporary art as well as a mockumentary project which is combined of photography, music, video, painting and graphic designs. We tell the story of protest and subculture in the late years of the soviet empire, at the age of Perestroyka. This was the time of the dreams that seemed to be coming true, of many hopes and total sense of freedom. Everything ended up on the early 90's with two Putsches (overthrown) that firstly destroyed the rest of the USSR and then ruined every hope to grew up the democracy just planted and suddenly rooted out. This project is called Синдром Длительного Сдавливания (medical term, syndrome of long-term compression, very symbolic name to the project).

 

This is a name of a "band" that we created as a summed image of the whole generation of informal artists and musicians living back in the 80's. This punk band would live and write music, would create music videos, some photographs left from them tell us about the way they looked like. They also studied arts and some of them left us his paintings. This is a fake story that we tell. But since we all had grown up back in the 80's you would better believe it is true!

 

What is your contribution to the project?

 

I write and record and produce songs, most of which were written, thought of and left unfinished  back in the 80's. I use old lyrics or write the new ones based on the old tunes. As a sound producer I recorded live performances of the band and as a stage designer I did decorations for their live appearances on some festivals. I also write the story behind the scene, I write characters, their speeches, ideas, interviews that they would give... 

With my wife Anika we did all digital pre-work for the paintings. This is going to be a mixture of the most famous classical russian paintings that everyone knows with punk characters added to them. A kind of a collage work, but fully painted. We also create a collection of graphic artworks for the band's "releases". Anika also designed and painted leather jackets for the band.

 

The SDS project is credited by Andrey Sharov and Tanatos Banionis, where the first is a well-known fashion designer in Russia and the 2d is a group of creators based on the Triumph gallery.
