Sepideh Moayed's profile

Radiology and Types of Imaging Studies

A Bay Area resident, Dr. Sepideh Moayed graduated from the Hahnemann Medical College and holds a doctor of medicine degree. Dr. Sepideh Moayed is the founder and chief executive officer of Preventative Medicine in Los Gatos, and also serves as a radiologist at the Los Gatos Medical Center. Radiology is a branch of medicine that analyzes anatomic images and is integral when it comes to primary, secondary and tertiary disease prevention. Radiologists do screenings of various body parts. Through radiology, doctors can better understand a patient's symptoms or conditions or detect a condition or disease. There are several types of diagnostic radiology procedures including X-rays, CTs, Ultrasound, MRI, PET (Positive Emission Tomography). X-rays are typically done for doctors to check bones or parts of the body such as the chest or abdomen. X-rays can detect fractures and various types of pneumonia. Most conditions require a patient to undergo further imaging studies for better assessment. CTs, computed axial tomography, involve both X-rays and a computer that can produce cross-section images of the body. They are more accurate and more detailed than X-rays, and can detect various types of cancer and small abnormalities that X-rays may not reveal. Ultrasound and MRI are superior when it comes to avoiding ionizing radiation. These procedures are often used in the pediatric population and those who need to minimize Xray and ionizing radiation exposure. MRI has been the gold standard when it comes to musculoskeletal imaging however in recent years, Ultrasound has gained momentum since it allows the radiologist to evaluate the dynamic range of motion rather than a static image. Dr. Moayed utilizes ultrasonography in her Preventative Medicine practice to help diagnose and when warranted treat various musculoskeletal conditions. Many MSK injuries can be healed with non-surgical techniques as well as localized interventions that will spare the patient from dangerous and habit-forming medications. With ultrasound imaging, MSK radiologists can diagnose, treat and reassess various ligamentous, joint and muscular injuries.
