I chose to focus on my own artwork that has been done in grayscale as my subject, in order to showcase tone. I wanted to challenge myself by sticking to one color scheme and exploring all of the different hues and textures to create interest. I did this by recycling my old artworks that were works in progress. My goal was to take something unfinished, like my old sketches, and create a final piece with them. I find the process of creating and the stages at which a project goes through to be fascinating. I started by taking photos of pieces that were all in some sort of raw state. Some were unpainted, some were done as practice leading up to a final project. I ultimately was drawn to those sketches the most as I was working. They were created without any sort of purpose, besides wanting to practice anatomy and texture. I wanted to figure out how to turn a piece that I might not have been super proud of, or projects made without intending anyone to view them, and make something that was final. By sticking to just gray tones from a pencil or pen, I was able to learn a lot about how to create variation and interest. I really focused on making sure that the colors didn’t blend too much or get too lost unintentionally. That is something I struggle with when just drawing with a pencil, so it ended up being a really great learning experience.
