Welcome to my Digital Visual Diary (lockdown edition) :)
I've included both of my completed portraits, as well as planning/tests of different mediums and techniques. My visual diary is at school, so I wasn't able to include the work I did early in the term. Please enjoy!
Artist Statement: This is a watercolour portrait of my mum, Harpreet Chana. When asked who I wanted to create a portrait of, my mum was first to come to mind. After sitting down and talking with her, I wanted to create a portrait of her as a young woman. She had told me her experiences when she was my age, or a little bit older. Knowing how much my mum sacrificed and the dreams she had as a young girl, an image of looking out through the window, pushing the curtains away, and having an expression of curiosity and sentiment came to life through the watercolour sketch I did. My mum has always felt more like a best friend, rather than a parent. We've shared many conversations and experiences together, and I hope that through this, I was able to show how much brighter she makes my life.
Artist Statement: This is a portrait of my friend, Nithara. From the time I've known her, Nithara has a very strong and bright aura, something that makes you feel comfortable to laugh and joke around with her. I also wanted to incorporate her favourite colour; pink, as well as her big smile. I wanted to showcase her personality through a portrait inspired by pop art/patterns. My work has normally been centred around grey lead sketching and some watercolours, so this was my first time trying something out of my comfort zon
This is just a sketch of my profile, for my self portrait. I wanted to create a portrait that uses newspaper and magazine scraps in a common colour palette.
This was an experiment on using different materials and more bolder, blocker colours for Nithara's portrait. However, I wanted to use a more variety of colours and wanted the focus to just be her face, so I didn't use this as my final.
This was a practice of using watercolours.
All three of these were my first plans of my final portraits. Although some things were the same, some things were also different and switched around.
