Fire Prevention on Construction Sites

Trained in construction management at Wentworth Institute of Technology and an Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) member, Jeff Lambert works with Ocean Bluff Development LLC in Marshfield, Massachusetts. As the company's CEO, Jeff Lambert works directly with many departments and local municipalities, including implementing the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) fire safety rules and regulations.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has specific requirements related to fire prevention and access to fire extinguishing equipment on construction sites. Following are rules in two key areas that must be followed by construction managers.

Fire alarm system: At a construction site, a fire alarm system must be installed to alert workers and the local fire department in case of a fire. If the construction has an automated sprinkler system planned, that must be activated as soon as each story is completed.

Fixed extinguishing systems: If a multi-story building is being constructed, fire extinguishers must be provided on every floor. At least one fire extinguisher must be provided adjacent to the stairway. It is also required to provide portable fire extinguishers wherever flammable chemicals are being used at the site.
