The Hot Stamped Foil Imaging Process
Foil imaging is a revolutionary printmaking technique developed at the University of Iowa by Professor Virginia A. Myers. Hot-stamped foil is a process of applying foil or roll-leaf using a combination of heat, pressure,and dwell time to adhere the foil to a wide variety of substrates, including but not limited to paper, metal, leather, or plastics. The foil or roll leaf is adhered to a plastic film which is then transferred to the substrate during the printing process. The foil is manufactured in a rainbow of metallics, pigments, pearl-escents, tin-foils, and specialty products including holograms.-from the Iowa Foil Printer web page.

Having created her own printmaking technique, she began to write a book illustrating to others how they could achieve the same results. But, there was something missing, a problem–she realized–that printing on a piece of silver leafed paper couldn’t solve: how to achieve a mirrored surface within the print. 

A piece of inspiration came when she thought, “What is this shiny stuff you see on Christmas cards and ads?” 

That shiny stuff ended up being commercially printed hot stamp foil. After talking to a friend in the commercial printing industry, Myers was sent a packet of foil cards that held samples of every type of foil imaginable, “There were ten kinds of silver, ten kinds of gold. Some had mirrored surfaces and some had a matte surface.” Enticed by the samples, she attended a conference for the printing industry to have all of her questions answered and, in the mid 1980s, she began experimenting with foil in her work. 

The foil adhered better if it was heated from both the bottom and the top, she found. With that, she had identified the guiding principle of what would become the Iowa Foil Printer, which Myers is credited with inventing in 1986. 

The IFP, as it is commonly referred to, has a heated roller coupled with an intricate electrical system that tempers heat to the roller. Pieces of foil are placed on acrylic-prepared paper, which are then laid on top of an electronic, thermo regulated hotplate and adhered with even pressure as the IFP is rolled back and forth across the print. A work in progress to this day, the newest model of the IFP is slated to come out later this year. 

UI began to offer a class in foil imaging in the spring semester of 1990, through which Myers and her students continued to experiment with these new techniques. 

She credits her students for as much or more of the advancement in the technique as herself and she includes many examples of student work in her text, Foil Imaging: A New Art Form (Virginia A. Myers, 2001).

Virginia Myers
Virginia Myers received a B.A. in drawing and painting from the Corcoran School of Art and George Washington University, Washington, D.C., an M.F.A. in painting from the California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland, Calif., and did postgraduate work in printmaking at the University of Illinois and The University of Iowa. She also studied at Atelier 17 in Paris, with support from a Fulbright fellowship. Myers teaches intaglio printmaking and foil stamping, an offering unique among fine arts schools around the world that was made possible by her invention of the Iowa Foil Printer. She and her students are developing and perfecting hot-stamped foil techniques to create original prints. Myers has presented more than 100 one-person shows and her work is included in collections at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.; the Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo, Ohio; and the Des Moines Art Center, Des Moines, Iowa.

I am a graphic designer with an MFA in Design from The University of Iowa. I currently teach graphic design at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. I continue to work in foil imaging and actively participate in the Annual Summer Intensive Foil Imaging Workshop.
 
My creative work utilizes printmaking techniques from lithography and foil imaging to produce prints. Printmaking is an area that has a historic connection to graphic design; both share history in commercial art and commercial printing. Working with a matrix and making multiples, mono prints or sequential prints let me explore visual combinations and bring in changing matrices during the art making process. 
 
As an artist and graphic design professional, my creative interests stem from many sources of inspiration—popular culture, science, history and current events. My art continues to be impacted by events around me. As an artist, I translate my observations into concrete images by exploring the connections between content, illustration and message. The depth of the work is achieved when my ideas are pushed to go beyond the information given, and engages an audience to create their “own” interpretation. My work has always used snippets of text to build content. These pieces of text ground the viewer to the experience and give the novice viewer somewhere to begin to build their visual dialogue.

About Anita Jung
 
Anita Jung is an associate professor at the University of Iowa. She previously taught printmaking, drawing and installation courses at Illinois State University, Ohio University and University of Tennessee. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Arizona State University where she majored in painting + drawing. The Master of Fine Arts was awarded to her from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she worked with Bill Weegee as a printer at Off Jones Road and Tandem Press. She has been involved with MAPC and SGC for many years as a participant, officer and host. She has also participated in the international IMPACT conferences in Posnan, Berlin and Tallinn. In 2005, she had a residency at the renowned Proyecto'ace atelier in Buenos Aires, Argentina where the work and exhibition Cuentos de Hadas (Fairytale) took place. Her works of art have been exhibited throughout the United States in juried, invitational and solo exhibitions

Deanne Warnholtz Wortman, adjunct assistant professor in printmaking, serves as the workshop’s instructor. Wortman is a graduate of the UI with degrees in printmaking, drawing, and intermedia arts. She has worked with Professor Virginia A. Myers for many years and continues her enthusiasm for foil imaging.

Ana Golici
Ana Golici is an artist/lithographer formerly of the Podul printmaking workshop in Romania. Golici came to the USA in 1987 where she continued her study of lithography with Bob Blackburn at the Printmaking Workshop. The New York cultural atmosphere inspired Golici, heightening the pace of her creative process: she started to experiment with Xerox transfers, on stone, on paper, on anything. Later, the computer proved to be the most efficient and effective tool for developing her ideas. Ana creates her work using Photoshop, printing large format images on a variety of papers, and experimenting most of the time. Because ofGolici’s traditional printmaking background, the digital prints she creates do not look like digital prints. She has participated in many printmaking biennials and triennials in Europe, USA, and Asia. Her work has been exhibited in New York Hall of Science, Hunter College Times Square Gallery, East-West Gallery in NY, and IPCNY. She has works in the Library of Congress Collection and in private collections in Europe and USA
