Activity 001: Discovering Patricia Urquiola
Patricia Urqioula is an award-winning architect and designer of interior spaces, furniture pieces, rugs, and even surfaces. Her works are not limited to one or two categories and it can all be used in different areas of spaces. What I like about her is that she is a versatile designer. I can see that her character is being reflected in her pieces. While all her designs are visually pleasing, their functionality is never compromised - which I think is a very important factor in designing.
When I look at her designs, the pop of colors is evident in natural materials she uses. It feels like her playful imagination and resourcefulness is being translated into how it would lead the design industry to evolution and innovation. I’m not sure if everyone is familiar with her design pieces but I, personally, can see how her works influenced the design community. Like for example the “Dudet Cassina” and “Pacific Moroso”. I have been seeing these furniture pieces even before I knew it was designed by her. Since some of her pieces are available for purchase here in the Philippines, I saw some local designers use them on their projects. Sometimes, there are even imitations that we can pre-order locally for a much more affordable price than the original one. It only proves how people love her design ideas.
