Museum of Design Atlanta - MODA

Branding
MODA

The Museum of Design Atlanta, or MODA, is an important design presence in the Southeast with a mission of advancing "the understanding and appreciation of design as the convergence of creativity and functionality through exhibitions, education, and programming for visitors of all ages." MODA is a wonderful museum in a beautiful new space, but I feel that their current logo falls short of, at the very least, the creative part of their mission. I decided to redesign the identity in an attempt to give the wonderful museum an identity that compliments the work inside.

The new MODA logotype represents an evolution in sophisticated design and establishes the museum as a unique presence in the museum community. The previous logo took one of the most popular and ubiquitous typefaces available, Helvetica, and applies it to metaphorical design building blocks. There is very little that is unique or memorable about the current logo. MODA does not currently have a signature brand but this rebrand attempts to address that.

The redesign of MODA’s logotype takes the building blocks of design and creates a unique logotype not reliant on a previously existing typeface. The custom letterforms help to create a strong brand. The new mark is a unique logotype, a graphic icon and a metaphor for the process of design.
Process

My process began by evaluating the current logo in relation to more effective logos in a similar market. Establishing what made these logos unique and memorable was important to the brainstorming and
sketching process. From sketching, I then began to play with some of my favorite concepts digitally in
Illustrator. Once I had honed in on a concept, I expolored different executions until I found one that I believed
to be most successful.
