Michael Tougher: Soundbop

This week we had another PDE graduate called Michael Tougher talked to us about his personal journey with a project he conceived in university. Soundbop is a product that helps children at a young age easily learn music. The concept was entered into the Design Innovation in Plastics competition and ended up winning. It was really interesting to see the journey Michael has been on trying to make this product a reality and bringing it to market. Michael kept on stating the reality of working in the industry and that things typically take twice as long and twice as much money than originally planned. It was nice to have the talk roughly centred around the problems faced and how he overcame them, instead of just the stating successes. There was a lot of emphasis on life after uni and bringing a product into fruition which we don't get a lot of experience during our studies. For example, I didn't quite realise how long and expensive it is to patent an idea. These insights into the industry are great in trying to help build an image of developing a product in today's world.
