HONG KONG ( 香港 )
Hong Kong has a long and complex history dating back to the Neolithic period and inhabited by various groups including the Tang dynasty, Portuguese and British traders, and various Chinese dynasties. In 1842, it was ceded to Britain as a result of the Treaty of Nanking and became a major center of commerce and a key gateway between China and the rest of the world. In 1997, it was returned to China as a Special Administrative Region (SAR) with a high degree of autonomy, including its own legal system, currency, and borders. However, it has faced challenges including political unrest and tensions with mainland China over issues such as human rights and autonomy erosion. Today, Hong Kong is a major international financial center and a hub of business, culture, and commerce in Asia, shaped by its rich history.
I have visited Hong Kong a number of times since the early '90s, and I really enjoy strolling the alleyways finding unusual shops and street food vendors, watching people walking fast in hurry. Every time I left the city, I always wanted to visit again. Just as Nury Vittachi said, "You can leave Hong Kong, but it will never leave you." Enjoy!
Thank you for traveling with me!
This is part of my ongoing travel visual clips, where I share a glimpse of my travel visuals and thoughts. Each series features a paragraph about the history of the place, followed by a paragraph describing my thoughts while exploring that place. Accompanied by no more than fifteen carefully curated images that I took, each series is intended to give you the umami of travel. - Julius Yls
