Game Design | Waste Not, Hoard Not

In summer 2020, I went back home from NYC to live with my parents in China and found out they kept a great number of useless objects which heavily compromised the functionality of the home as well as reduced the quality of life. After conflicts and negotiation, the hoarding level of my home got improved. However, along the process, I got to know that hoarding is a big issue in Chinese households since many Chinese families are constantly having conflicts over different hoarding and cleaning habits, such as seen in the exhibition Waste Not. As a result, I designed a game to express the issue as well as set a context for the opposing sides in the contradiction to understand and negotiate with each other.
In order to highlight the conflict between the hoarder and the discarder in a home, the battle mode in the game applies the cycle between opposite sides where the horader will secretly hide items and the discarder will secretly throw the same item out of the house.
