Bike Coalition of Philadelphia: Keep MLK Drive Open
Collaborative Map Illustration by Sara Gingras and Colin McCarthy
Since the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Martin Luther King Jr. Drive has been shut down for pedestrian use, providing a fun biking trail for those wanting to be safe while outdoors during the Pandemic. The Bike Coalition of Philadelphia has been a major proponent in this change, and continues to support the decision to keep MLK Drive open to the public. To promote the benefits of MLK Drive, the Bike Coalition reached out to my design class at Tyler to create an illustrated map that would highlight its beauty.
Process
I worked with Colin McCarthy, one of our team members, and our professor, Brian Satalino, to design a map that portrayed all the essential elements of MLK Drive. We did research into which Philadelphia landmarks we could include that were along the trail, from the Art Museum all the way to Strawberry Mansion. A logistical problem we faced when designing the map was the point of view. We chose a perspective that would allow the viewer to get the full sense of the unique landmarks that surround the trail.
