Way-Finding System Design

Stage 1: The Ground Work

Before starting work on the project, I came up with seven questions that would help me understand the user, context, consistency, identity, anchor points, spatial orientation of user, and navigation, within the system I would create. The space I worked with for the project was the “senior school section of a school”.

Upon research and insight, there were seven issues identified in the domain, among which were issues such as workload pressure, fear of failure, and internal comparison. After understanding their roots, the requirements the way-finding system had to address were finalised, such as providing reassurance, comfort, encouragement, and nurturing to the students to blossom as individuals. This defined the working brief with which to proceed to the ideation phase.

From the understanding that way-finding is identity branding through signages, I proceeded to explore possibilities for the various spaces inside of the senior school section to meet the defined requirements.

Stage 2: Interaction And Visual Language

The ideation comes down to defining an interaction pattern and a visual language that sets the tone of the environment in the required direction. This is expressed through elements such as colour, material, graphic style, typography, proportions, and surface and distance of occurrence. Displayed here are a few explorations done for the same.
