Approximately 1.5 billion disposable facemasks made their way into our waterways and oceans in 2020, with much higher number projected for this year.

Each one will take about 450 years to decompose in the ocean, so we've created yet another ecological disaster (or more accurately, piled on an existing one).

The inspiration and drive for this image came from noticing and despairing at all the masks on the ground around town during my walk to the office last month, when the mask mandate returned in Melbourne, Australia.

I picked some up and shot them in a simple studio setup
(while wearing PPE myself), arranging them to the angles and lighting that I needed, before compositing in Photoshop.
