Daniel Simon's Bubble Ship

Daniel Simon's Bubble Ship
Here is some fan art of the iconic Bubble Ship from the movie Oblivion. This project is based on the work of Daniel Simon. You can check out his work here: https://danielsimon.com/film-design/oblivion/

I re-watched Oblivion and enjoyed the movie, but absolutely loved the design work of of the bubble ship. I did my best to re-create the ship in Fusion 360. In the first 4 shots I tried to replicate the look Daniel used for his concepts. All renders are done in Redshift.

"Are you an effective team?"
For those of you who do not know, the Bubble Ship is the main transport vehicle for the Jack clones (played by Tom Cruise in Oblivion) whose purpose is to provide technical and repair support for the Drone robots and the hydro-rigs. In the movie, the drones often break down or malfunction and Jack takes the bubble ship on location to solve the issue. The Bubble Ship also seems to be the only way to access the Sky Towers from which the Jack and Victoria clones operate.

Sky Tower landing pad
Jack and Victoria live and work in the Sky Tower. These towers are essentially massive penthouses that sit above the clouds. While a Sky Tower may have all the comforts of home it is a base of operations that connects directly with the Tet (a space station thought to be inhabited by humans). The Sky Towers feature a long outdoor walkway that connects to the Bubble Ship's landing pad. An unknown number of Sky Towers were constructed by the Tet (now controlled by artificial intelligence) with a single one located in the approximate geographic center of each zone. Two towers are shown in Oblivion, numbers 49 and 52.

Fusion 360

Here are some shots directly in Fusion. I spent about 6 months (2 hours a day) creating the ship based on Daniel Simon's references. There are so many interesting shapes on this ship and I spent a lot of time redoing different parts over and over before deciding it was good enough. At one point while working on the project, I realized the diamond shape was echoed throughout the design: the main body, tail, connections to engines, windows and details. It was a lot of fun to observe the shapes on this ship and take the time to understand the relationship between them. A truly beautiful design that I got the chance to admire throughout the modeling process.
